China, Pakistan air transportation cooperation increases with the construction of another terminal at the Allama Iqbal Airport in Lahore set to be completed by 2026.
Pakistan and China’s collaboration in air travel has accelerated, much like their cooperation in road and maritime projects, with the launch of a major construction initiative for a new terminal at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport.
The project is progressing in partnership with the Civil Aviation Authority, Pakistan Airports Authority, and China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). Its objective is to enhance passenger convenience and alleviate congestion at one of Pakistan’s busiest airports.
Upon completion, the upgraded terminal will strengthen Pakistan’s international connectivity, generate local employment, and contribute to regional growth. It will also significantly enhance the airport’s infrastructure and operational efficiency.
Slated for completion by September 2026, the expansion will drastically improve the airport’s capacity. Immigration counters will be increased sixfold, and baggage handling capabilities will triple. Notable enhancements include a rise in departure immigration counters from 10 to 64, arrival immigration counters from 18 to 80, and security checkpoints from 4 to 8.
Additionally, check-in counters will expand from 25 to 67, customs inspection points from 12 to 24, passenger boarding bridges from 4 to 6, and baggage conveyor belts from 2 to 6. A CCECC representative stated that the new terminal will accommodate over 12 million passengers annually, reducing congestion and wait times. The expansion is strategically designed to meet growing travel demands for the next 15 to 20 years.
