Athens and Shanghai forge twinning partnership through an agreement on Thursday.
Athens and Shanghai solidified their partnership on Thursday by signing a twinning agreement aimed at fostering cooperation across various sectors.
The agreement was signed in Athens by Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng and Athens Mayor Haris Doukas.
As per a press release from the City of Athens, the collaboration will focus on areas such as tourism, culture, sports, entrepreneurship, innovation, education, and climate action.
Mayor Doukas expressed excitement over the formalization of the partnership, emphasizing the strategic importance of both cities. “This partnership extends beyond tourism — it’s about connecting our people and working together to create resilient, sustainable, and innovative urban centers,” he stated during the signing event at Athens City Hall.
Mayor Zheng described the agreement as the start of a new chapter for the two cities. He noted that by enhancing exchanges and cooperation, both cities aim to achieve mutual prosperity and benefit for their citizens.
A direct flight route between Athens and Shanghai, operational since April last year, has played a key role in promoting interaction and strengthening ties between the two cities.
The new agreement builds on a history of collaboration between Athens and Shanghai, which includes several memoranda of understanding signed since 2009, according to the City of Athens.
