Beijing achieved a record 290 days of good air quality in 2024, marking the highest level since air quality monitoring began, according to the municipal ecology and environment bureau on Thursday.
These days of favorable air quality represented 79.2 percent of the year, an increase of 19 days from 2023 and a remarkable improvement of 114 days compared to 2013. Additionally, the days with severe air pollution dropped sharply from 58 in 2013 to just two in 2024, reflecting a reduction of 96.6 percent.
The average PM2.5 concentration in Beijing was recorded at 30.5 micrograms per cubic meter in 2024, maintaining compliance with national standards for the fourth consecutive year. PM2.5 levels, a critical measure of air pollution, indicate the presence of fine particles with diameters of 2.5 microns or smaller.
Since 2013, the annual average concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide in Beijing have declined significantly by 65.9 percent, 50 percent, 57.1 percent, and 88.7 percent, respectively.
