Tesla’s Shanghai energy storage Megafactory has entered trial production, exemplifying China-U.S. collaboration in tackling climate challenges.
The facility is focused on producing Tesla’s Megapacks, advanced energy-storage batteries, with mass production slated to begin in the first quarter of 2025, Tesla China stated on Tuesday.
Designed with an initial annual output capacity of 10,000 units, the factory can deliver approximately 40 gigawatt-hours of energy storage, according to the company.
As Tesla’s second plant in Shanghai, the project highlights the company’s commitment to investing in China, confidence in its manufacturing strength, and the enhanced economic ties between the nations in the new energy sector, noted Wu Qisheng, a researcher at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences.
Spanning 200,000 square meters, the facility represents a total investment of about 1.45 billion yuan (approximately $198.7 million), according to the Lin-gang Special Area administration of the Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone.
