Gwadar airport operationalizes advanced landing system for bad weather to enhance safety during unfavorable conditions.

The New Gwadar International Airport (NGIA) has successfully integrated the advanced Instrument Landing System (ILS) CAT-III(B), designed to facilitate safe aircraft landings and take-offs even in unfavorable weather conditions.

The ILS is a ground-based navigation technology that provides precise runway approach guidance for pilots. Its critical importance lies in ensuring safe and efficient operations during low-visibility scenarios.

According to an official from the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA), the system enables aircraft to land with a Runway Visual Range (RVR) as low as 50 meters. However, three key conditions must be met: visibility must be at least 50 meters, pilots must be trained for ILS CAT-III(B) landings, and aircraft must have compatible avionics systems.

The Civil Aviation Authority has informed airlines to upgrade their avionics and train their pilots to fully utilize the ILS CAT-III(B) system. This proactive approach aims to reduce passenger delays and enhance safety during adverse weather.

A representative from the Pakistan Airport Authority (PAA) highlighted that such advanced systems are crucial as severe weather can lead to delays, jeopardize passenger safety, and increase costs for airlines.

The representative further emphasized that the ILS CAT-III(B) enhances situational awareness, enabling Gwadar Airport to efficiently handle challenges such as storms, low visibility, wind shifts, precipitation, and runway surface conditions.
