The 2024 Beijing Forum on Swift Response to Public Complaints opened in Beijing, demonstrating China’s commitment to advancing urban governance and public service innovation. Co-hosted by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the China Media Group (CMG), the Communist Party of China (CPC) Beijing Municipal Committee, and the People’s Government of Beijing Municipality, the event attracted domestic and international dignitaries, including Yin Li, secretary of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee, and other prominent officials. The forum underscored the effectiveness of China’s governance model in addressing citizens’ needs, presenting Beijing as a global leader in urban management.
Yin Li emphasized the Chinese government’s prioritization of people-centered urban development. With a history of over 3,000 years, Beijing has seamlessly blended its cultural heritage with modern governance innovations. The city’s “Swift Response to Public Complaints” initiative has been a cornerstone of this approach, proactively addressing governance challenges by incorporating public feedback. By resolving diverse issues raised by residents, Beijing has significantly improved its public service delivery, showcasing its ability to adapt to the evolving aspirations of its population.
At the forum, Gao Xiang, president of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, highlighted Beijing’s role as a model for urban grassroots governance. The city’s reforms, grounded in the “Swift Response to Public Complaints” initiative, have not only enhanced the quality of urban living but also contributed to the modernization of China’s governance system. By aligning governance strategies with citizens’ needs, Beijing has offered valuable insights into managing megacities, demonstrating how a people-centered approach can lead to sustainable development.
Fan Yun of CMG showcased how the organization is amplifying Beijing’s governance achievements through innovative storytelling. CMG’s documentary productions, such as “Hotline Beijing,” highlight the city’s advancements and serve as a testament to China’s credibility, lovability, and respectability on the global stage. Through its international broadcasting capabilities in 81 languages, CMG is effectively sharing Beijing’s governance model and modernization journey with audiences worldwide.
The forum culminated in the release of several key documents, including the “Compilation of Research Papers on Swift Response to Public Complaints in Beijing” and the “Evaluation Report on Worldwide City Hotline Services and Governance Effectiveness.” These outcomes underline the global relevance of Beijing’s reforms and their potential as a blueprint for sustainable urban governance. Since 2019, Beijing has processed 150 million public complaints with an impressive 97% resolution and satisfaction rate, positioning itself as a beacon of efficient and people-centered governance.
