The much-anticipated sequel to the 2019 animated hit “Ne Zha,” titled “Ne Zha 2,” is set to premiere during the 2025 Spring Festival. Its release date is scheduled for Lunar New Year’s Day, January 29.
Announced on Tuesday via the film’s official Weibo account, the news came with a promotional video featuring an action-ready Ne Zha, marking the character’s exciting return.
Directed by Yang Yu, also known as Jiaozi, the film reflects a five-year effort to build on the massive success of the original “Ne Zha.” The first film, released in 2019, became a cultural milestone, earning over 5 billion yuan (approximately 695 million USD) and setting a record as China’s top-grossing animated movie.
“Ne Zha 2” will compete in the 2025 Spring Festival movie lineup, which includes other major titles such as Tsui Hark’s “The Legend of the Condor Heroes,” Wuershan’s “Creation of the Gods II,” and “Boonie Bears: Future Reborn,” the latest installment of the popular family-friendly series.
The Spring Festival holiday, spanning from January 28 to February 4 in 2025, is traditionally the most profitable period for Chinese cinemas. In 2024, this festive season saw four Spring Festival releases among the year’s top five highest earners.
