China advocates UN-Centric order at Paris Peace Forum amidst rapid challenges to global political environment.
Former Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying emphasized China’s vision of an international order centered around the United Nations, during her remarks at the 7th Paris Peace Forum held in the French capital on Monday.
Speaking on a panel focused on the global implications of the U.S. presidential election, Fu contrasted China’s approach with that of the West. She pointed out that rapid global changes and years of U.S. strategic overreach have led to American reluctance to engage deeply in international affairs.
“Sometimes, Americans act as saboteurs, undermining the Western global order themselves,” Fu remarked.
Fu also questioned whether the U.S. would use its elections to reform the Western-led global order, making it more inclusive and open, or whether it would further weaken it.
Forum participants, under the theme “Wanted: A functioning global order,” highlighted the critical role of multilateralism in global governance.
Justin Vaisse, the Paris Peace Forum’s director-general, stressed the need to unite those who value cooperation and coordination to protect multilateralism. He warned that ineffective global governance and poor public goods management could increase the risk of future conflicts.
Representatives from various governments, international organizations, NGOs, and think tanks discussed pressing global issues such as rising geopolitical tensions, climate change, and artificial intelligence regulation during the event.
The Paris Peace Forum, initiated in 2018 by French President Emmanuel Macron, aims to promote multilateral collaboration and tackle global challenges.
