Federal Minister for Power Sardar Leghari highlights Pakistan’s energy transformation at BRI Conference held in Qingdao, China.
Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Leghari commended Pakistan’s partnership with China under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) for significantly changing the nation’s energy landscape during his remarks at the Third Belt and Road Energy Ministerial Conference in Qingdao, China. He acknowledged the contributions of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) in mitigating Pakistan’s electricity shortages and establishing a foundation for a more environmentally friendly future. “Through CPEC, we have effectively addressed electricity shortages and set the stage for a greener, sustainable energy future,” Leghari stated, emphasizing Pakistan’s dedication to renewable energy and the need for international collaboration in the energy sector.
In his speech, Leghari congratulated the Chinese National Energy Administration for organizing the conference and highlighted the critical role of global cooperation in energy initiatives. He expressed his support for the Belt and Road Green Energy Cooperation Action Plan for 2024-29 and backed the establishment of the Belt and Road Energy Partnership (BREP) secretariat in Beijing, recognizing its significance in enhancing energy infrastructure and fostering sustainable economic development through energy trading.
Key Achievements by Pakistan’s energy sector
Leghari pointed out key achievements in Pakistan’s energy sector, such as the addition of over 8,000 megawatts to the national grid through 15 CPEC projects. He mentioned that the second phase of CPEC, which commenced last year, focuses on increasing cooperation in renewable energy and modernizing transmission and distribution systems. Pakistan aims to generate 60 percent of its energy from renewable sources, which aligns with its new national development framework based on five priorities: Energy and Infrastructure, E-Pakistan, Equity and Empowerment, Exports, and Environment and Climate Change.
Leghari also detailed Pakistan’s new national development framework, which is in harmony with the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). He encouraged international investors to explore opportunities in Pakistan’s energy sector, stating, “By collaborating, we can expedite advancements in renewable energy, enhance grid systems, and ensure a secure and sustainable energy future.”
Further, he underscored Pakistan’s willingness to welcome foreign investments in clean energy projects, such as the electric vehicle assembly plant being set up by BYD in partnership with Hub Power Company. He also emphasized that addressing climate change and ensuring energy security will necessitate collaborative global efforts, concluding, “Mutual trust and cooperation are essential for building a sustainable future for all.”
