Pak-China Friendship Hospital set to treat female cancer patients in Gwadar as a mammography service has been launched.
The Pak-China Friendship Hospital in Gwadar has launched a mammography service to treat cancer patients, with a special focus on breast cancer. This service was inaugurated by Provincial Minister for Planning and Development, Mir Zahoor Ahmed.
Dr. Affan Faiq, Head of the Cancer Department at the hospital, stated that breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women in Gwadar, Balochistan. Consequently, the newly introduced service offers screening mammography, diagnostic mammography, ductography, and needle localization, all performed by female technologists under the guidance of a radiologist.
Dr. Faiq also emphasized that the incidence of breast cancer is rising in Balochistan, and to combat challenges such as lack of awareness, cultural barriers, and limited resources, the hospital provides free cancer screenings and clinical breast exams (CBE) for women.
Additionally, he highlighted the importance of mammography in early detection, noting that it can reveal changes in the breast up to two years before they are physically detectable, making early treatment and breast-conservation therapies possible. Moreover, breast cancer affected 2.3 million women and caused 670,000 deaths in 2022 globally, impacting women of all ages but becoming more common in later life.
