2024 Sichuan conference: Pakistani businessmen and SAARC CCI strengthen economic ties and mutual cooperation.
Pakistani business leaders and SAARC CCI are strengthening economic ties at the 2024 Sichuan – South Asia & Southeast Asia Business Development Conference in China. The conference, held on September 11 in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, was organized by SAARC Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SAARC CCI), the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), and the Provincial Government of Sichuan. It focused on themes of “Green, Open and Sharing” under the banner of “Together Build the Belt and Road and Draw a Blueprint for Cooperation.”
The conference featured notable Pakistani representatives including Zulfiqar Ali Butt, Secretary General of SAARC CCI; Mubashir Ahmed Shahid, Managing Director of INFONEX BPO; and Nasir Mehmood, CEO of Shah Posh. Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidri, a member of the National Assembly and former Deputy Chairman of the Senate, emphasized the importance of regional cooperation and China’s role in fostering economic growth in South Asia.
Chandi Raj Dhakal, Acting President of SAARC CCI, highlighted South Asia’s market potential due to its size and untapped resources. He noted, however, that the region faces challenges such as inadequate technological infrastructure. Mian Anjum Nisar, Vice President of SAARC CCI (Pakistan Chapter), praised the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) for its role in strengthening bilateral relations and transforming the regional economic landscape through its infrastructure projects.
Hu Yun, Vice Governor of the Sichuan Provincial People’s Government, reiterated the importance of enhancing economic ties between China and South Asia for mutual benefit. Several parallel events were held alongside the conference, including discussions on investment opportunities, construction cooperation projects, and the resolution of commercial disputes.
A significant outcome of the conference was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between SAARC CCI and the Chengdu Institute of Standardization. The MoU aims to promote economic and trade exchanges, industrial cooperation, and personnel exchanges between Chengdu and South Asian countries through standardization.
