Beijing to stage grand lantern show to mark Mid-Autumn Festival showcasing a blend of traditional Zigong artistry and Beijing’s cultural heritage with planned iconic performances and workshops.
Beijing is preparing to host a grand lantern show for the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday. Running from September 14 to October 31 at the Beijing Garden Expo Park, the show will feature over 200 lantern displays and about 100,000 decorations.
Blend of Zigong’s Artistry and Beijing’s Heritage
This event continues the traditional Chinese custom of lantern fairs, with the intricate lanterns crafted by artisans from Zigong, a city known for its lantern-making heritage. The Zigong lantern show is recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage, and this year’s display will blend traditional Zigong artistry with elements of Beijing’s cultural heritage.
Approximately 70 percent of the lantern designs will reflect iconic features of Beijing, such as the Central Axis, traditional courtyards, and folk culture. The event will also include more than 150 specialty shops, over 20 themed performances, and interactive activities like traditional craft workshops and riddle-solving games.
