China releases first homegrown PC operating system featuring AI at the China Operating System Conference 2024 in Beijing.
At the 2024 China Operating System Industry Conference in Beijing, the Chinese company Kylinsoft introduced the AIPC version of its Kylin operating system. This is China’s first AI-integrated operating system for personal computers, addressing a gap in edge-side inference capabilities within the country’s operating system industry.
The new operating system functions as the core of a computer, linking high-level software with hardware resources and providing crucial support for running AI algorithms and applications. Historically, operating systems were predominantly developed by European and American firms, but China’s entry into this field has been relatively recent and challenging.
Recent advances in AI technology have opened new opportunities for Chinese operating systems. In 2023, the Chinese platform software market grew 17.4% to 81.66 billion yuan, with the operating system market expanding by 23.2%, driven largely by the demand for server operating systems and AI servers, according to Gao Dan of CCID Consulting Co., Ltd.
Features of AIPC
A key feature of the AIPC version is its edge-side inference capability, which enables deep integration of hardware and software, allowing users to run complex AI tasks locally rather than relying on cloud resources. This innovation enhances data processing speed, security, and the overall user experience.
Zhu Chen of Kylinsoft highlighted that the edge-side inference capabilities support the integration of AI with homegrown operating systems. This development enables the creation of a highly efficient edge-side intelligent engine within the operating system, capable of offline large model inference, thus protecting user privacy and improving productivity.
Furthermore, the AIPC operating system has diverse applications, including autonomous driving, where it processes sensor data for real-time decision-making, healthcare for medical image analysis and drug development, and education for personalized learning resources and tutoring, thereby enhancing efficiency and outcomes in these fields.
