July 28 – Ambassador Khalil visits Shanghai, China showing commitment to strengthen economic ties between China and Pakistan.

Pakistan Ambassador to China Khalil Hashmi emphasized on Tuesday that the Yangtze River Delta, a dynamic economic hub and manufacturing center in China, is becoming a focal point for potential collaboration between Pakistan and China, particularly in electric vehicles, new energy materials, and semiconductors.

The ambassador’s visit highlighted Pakistan’s dedication to strengthening economic ties and seeking opportunities for investment and cooperation.

During his current visit to Shanghai, Ambassador Hashmi participated in numerous meetings with political leaders, business executives, academics, and media representatives, underlining the city’s crucial role as an entry point to the Yangtze River Delta region.

The Yangtze River Delta, encompassing Shanghai and the provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Anhui, is a major driver of China’s industrial innovation and economic growth. Covering around 358,000 square kilometers, the region accounts for nearly a quarter of China’s GDP and over a third of the nation’s total foreign trade, illustrating its strategic significance in the national economy, according to a CEN report.

Ambassador Hashmi highlighted the substantial opportunities for joint ventures and collaborations between Pakistan and China in the Yangtze River Delta. He pointed out the potential in sectors such as electric vehicles, where China is a global leader, new energy materials essential for sustainable development, and semiconductors, a critical component of modern technology.

Pakistan has intensified its efforts to attract Chinese investment following Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s recent visit to China, which resulted in a joint statement outlining 13 priority export-oriented industrial sectors for Pakistan’s development.

These 13 sectors, including mines and minerals, iron and steel, petrochemicals, oil and refineries, agriculture, ICT, semiconductors, electric vehicles, and solar panels, are pivotal areas where China’s technological advancements can aid Pakistan’s sustainable growth.

To facilitate business collaboration, Ambassador Hashmi stressed the significance of active participation in exhibitions, conferences, and events to connect the business communities of both countries. He mentioned that the upcoming FoodAg Pakistan event, set for early next month in Karachi, has already seen registration from 220 Chinese companies. These efforts aim to elevate economic trade and investment cooperation to new levels.

Beyond business endeavors, Ambassador Hashmi also underscored cultural initiatives to foster mutual understanding. He announced plans for Pakistan Fashion Week in Shanghai this year to showcase Pakistan’s vibrant fashion industry and cultural heritage.

Additionally, a tour operator exchange program is being planned to further enhance tourism and people-to-people contacts.
