China initiates groundbreaking Student (Youth) Games with ambitious goals
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Nanning vibrantly displayed China’s rich heritage and culture in a spectacular ceremony, inaugurating the nation’s first Student (Youth) Games at the Guangxi Sports Center Stadium on Sunday night.

The Games is born out of the fusion of the National Youth Games and the National Student Games. This strategic move seeks to dismantle the barriers that separate the sports and education sectors, streamlining and refining the system of youth sporting events.

In previous years, China used to organize campus and professional youth sports competitions separately, creating a dilemma for many students who had to choose between their studies and pursuing a career in sports.

However, the decision to stage the newly minted Student (Youth) Games represents a major breakthrough in bridging the gap between academia and sports, allowing young athletes to compete at a high level while continuing their education.

By nurturing the development of promising athletic talents, this amalgamation offers young individuals a wider and more expansive stage to exhibit their skills and abilities, while simultaneously fostering a harmonious balance between academic pursuits and athletic endeavors.

“The hosting of the Student (Youth) Games serves as a vital measure to propel the reform and development of youth sports in the modern era, bolster the physical well-being of young individuals, and promote the cultivation of future talents in competitive sports,” said Li Hui, an official at the State General Administration of Sport.

“Moreover, it stands as a pivotal platform to assess the achievements made in integrating sports and education,” he added.

The inaugural Student (Youth) Games is divided into the Open Group and the Campus Group, with the Campus Group further categorized into the University Group and the Secondary School Group. A total of 39 sports, 51 disciplines, and an impressive 805 events have been included in the competition.

The current edition of the Games is the first comprehensive national sports event of its kind hosted by China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It not only serves as a major platform for fierce competition and fruitful exchange in school sports nationwide, but also promises to drive the expansion of campus sports activities and create a vibrant atmosphere for young individuals to actively participate in physical exercise.

In the Open Group, 198 events have already been concluded, with numerous records being shattered. Notably, in the discipline of fin swimming, two world youth records were broken, while in shooting, three individuals achieved new Asian records across two different events. On the athletics field, three athletes made their mark by smashing national youth records.

As Li eloquently puts it, the 1st Student (Youth) Games constitutes a valuable exploration in deepening the integration of sports and education in China. “I firmly believe that we will witness the emergence of countless future stars on the fields of Guangxi, who will become the backbone of international competitions in the years to come,” he noted.
