More than 250 Million inter regional trips expected on 10th day of Spring Festival rush.
Over 250 million inter-regional trips are anticipated in China on Thursday, the 10th day of the Spring Festival travel rush, commonly known as chunyun.
Data from transportation authorities monitoring the 2025 chunyun revealed an estimated 256.57 million trips on Thursday. These include 13.2 million passengers traveling by rail, 240.31 million by highway, 680,000 by waterway, and 2.38 million by air.
Wednesday recorded 233.86 million inter-regional trips, reflecting a 1.4% increase from the previous day and a 14.9% rise compared to the same period last year.
A total of around 9 billion inter-regional trips are forecasted during this year’s chunyun, marking a 7% year-on-year increase, according to a national teleconference held in late December.
The annual chunyun period, which runs from January 14 to February 22 in 2025, is known for high transportation demand as people travel home for family reunions.
This year’s chunyun is particularly significant as it marks the first since UNESCO added the Spring Festival to its intangible cultural heritage list in December.
