Punjab seeks China’s expertise to combat pollution
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif proposed forming a joint working group with China to combat environmental pollution in Shanghai.

The Beijing-Punjab Working Group would focus on knowledge exchange, policy development, capacity building, data sharing, and technology transfer. Through collaboration, green urban planning, renewable energy, and e-transport initiatives would help reduce carbon emissions.

Speaking at a special climate change meeting in Shanghai, the Chief Minister noted her amazement at China’s transformation over 32 years, calling it a modern-day miracle. She highlighted China’s advancements in infrastructure, industrial development, and its ability to control environmental pollution as inspirational for Pakistan.

Furthermore, she praised the Chinese Minister of Environment for significantly improving air quality, attributing this success to effective and long-term measures. She also commended President Xi Jinping’s vision of shared global progress, noting China’s commitment to supporting countries grappling with environmental challenges, including Pakistan.

The Chief Minister acknowledged Punjab’s environmental challenges, emphasizing her determination to make the province both economically stable and environmentally resilient. She expressed a desire to provide a clean environment for Punjab’s 150 million residents, while highlighting ongoing efforts by the Senior Minister to address climate issues.

She discussed Pakistan’s smog problem, which lasts 100–120 days annually, and outlined short, medium, and long-term plans for its resolution. During her visit to the Blue Tech Clean Air Alliance, she gained insights into China’s smog mitigation strategies and their impressive outcomes.

The Punjab government is introducing reforms in agriculture, transport, and industrial sectors to mitigate pollution. Mechanized and e-mechanized farming is replacing traditional methods, and crop residue burning is being controlled with modern machinery. Punjab’s first e-transport policy is gradually transitioning traditional vehicles to electric models, while industrial units are being monitored and relocated outside urban areas following the Chinese model.

The Chief Minister expressed hope that collaboration with China would yield positive results in addressing biodiversity and environmental pollution. She emphasized the importance of sharing ideas, technology, and experiences through the joint working group and highlighted renewable energy projects already underway in Punjab, including collaborations on solar and wind energy.

She concluded by expressing admiration for China’s wind energy corridor, which she observed during her visit, and highlighted ongoing efforts to collaborate with Chinese companies to alleviate economic pressures from high electricity prices.
