President Xi’s southeast Asia visit strengthens regional ties, Wang Yi stated during a press briefing.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi described President Xi Jinping’s recent Southeast Asia visit as a resounding success, emphasizing its focus on strengthening good-neighborly ties and enhancing mutually beneficial cooperation.
Wang, who also serves on the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said during a press briefing that Xi’s trip to Vietnam, Malaysia, and Cambodia, his first overseas visit of the year, conveyed China’s firm support for multilateralism and global trade norms.
Discussing Xi’s visit to Vietnam, Wang highlighted that strong leadership coordination between the two nations is a key advantage and a critical foundation for advancing China-Vietnam relations.
Both sides agreed to deepen their comprehensive strategic cooperation under the “six mores” framework, aiming for higher-quality collaboration and accelerated efforts to build a shared future community.
During the Vietnam visit, railway cooperation was expanded and upgraded, showcasing both countries’ resolve to pursue common development.
Speaking on Xi’s stop in Malaysia, Wang emphasized that the major achievement was the elevation of bilateral ties to a high-level strategic community with a shared future.
This move further enhances the partnership that was initially outlined in 2023 when both nations agreed to jointly build a China-Malaysia shared future community.
A key takeaway from the Malaysia visit was both sides’ pledge to take the lead in regional cooperation on “new quality productive forces,” especially in fields like digital technology, green innovation, and AI.
Regarding Cambodia, Wang said the most significant moment was the joint announcement by Xi and Prime Minister Hun Manet to upgrade relations to an “all-weather” China-Cambodia community with a shared future, marking the first such upgrade with a Southeast Asian country.
Wang noted that throughout the trip, Xi reaffirmed China’s belief in the shared benefits of economic globalization and cautioned against isolationist policies.
Xi warned that trade wars harm the global economic order and infringe upon the legitimate interests of nations—particularly developing countries.
He called for stronger coordination between China and its neighbors within the Global South to resist bloc-based confrontations and unilateralism, instead promoting Asian values like peace, inclusiveness, openness, and cooperation.
Despite growing protectionism, Xi emphasized China’s commitment to high-quality development and its readiness to expand high-standard openness to share development prospects with nearby countries.
He concluded by welcoming more high-quality imports from ASEAN members, reaffirming China’s commitment to being an open and accessible market for its neighbors.
