Xi’an on-site airport museum opens for public offering an insight to the cultural relics discovered during construction of the airport.
A museum displaying cultural relics unearthed during different phases of construction at Xi’an Xianyang International Airport has officially opened to the public. The museum, located at the largest air transportation hub in northwest China, offers visitors a glimpse into the region’s rich historical past.
Spanning 6,400 square meters, the museum exhibits artifacts from various historical periods of ancient China, according to Hou Chao, manager of the cultural operations department at China West Airport Group (Xi’an) Commercial Development Company. Future plans for the museum include enhancing exhibition designs and integrating advanced technologies such as AR displays and virtual reality to create a more immersive visitor experience.
Between June 2020 and October 2022, during the third-phase expansion of the airport, archaeologists discovered 6,848 ancient cultural sites. These included 4,093 ancient tombs and 2,755 other structures such as pottery kilns, ash pits, enclosures, and roads. Additionally, over 22,000 artifacts were unearthed, shedding light on the region’s historical and cultural significance.
Xi’an is a renowned tourist destination in China, famous for its rich historical heritage. It is home to iconic landmarks such as the Terracotta Warriors, the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, and the Bell Tower. With a history spanning over 3,100 years, Xi’an served as the capital of 13 Chinese dynasties, further reinforcing its status as a key cultural and historical center.
