Xi to visit to Russia, attend Great Patriotic War Victory celebrations as the relations between the two countries continue to advance.
Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to make a state visit to Russia from May 7 to 10, where he will also attend events commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The visit is being made at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to a statement from China’s foreign ministry spokesperson on Sunday.
The spokesperson noted that under the strategic leadership of Presidents Xi and Putin, China-Russia relations have consistently advanced, even amid a challenging global environment. Their partnership is characterized by enduring neighborly ties, comprehensive strategic alignment, and mutual cooperation that yields benefits for both sides.
During the visit, President Xi is expected to hold strategic talks with President Putin, focusing on the evolving China-Russia relationship as well as key global and regional developments of common interest.
The spokesperson expressed confidence that the consensus between the two leaders will further solidify political trust, enrich strategic cooperation, advance practical collaboration in multiple sectors, improve the wellbeing of both nations’ peoples, and inject greater stability and constructive momentum into the international arena.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of several pivotal events: China’s victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the Great Patriotic War, and the global triumph in the World Anti-Fascist War. The spokesperson emphasized that China and Russia, as central battlefronts in Asia and Europe during World War II, made profound sacrifices and vital contributions to defeating fascism, protecting their nations, and securing a better future for humanity.
The two presidents have previously agreed to jointly honor history, pay tribute to fallen heroes, uphold an accurate understanding of World War II, safeguard the legacy of victory, and maintain the post-war international order while promoting justice and fairness on the global stage.
At this historic moment, President Xi’s attendance at the Moscow celebrations is a significant element of his trip. It also reflects the mutual respect and support China and Russia extend to each other in commemorating the 80th anniversary of the World Anti-Fascist War.
Additionally, this year marks eight decades since the founding of the United Nations. The spokesperson underscored that China and Russia, as founding members and permanent members of the UN Security Council, bear a special responsibility in upholding a global system centered on the UN.
The two countries will deepen coordination across multilateral platforms such as the UN, SCO, and BRICS. They aim to unite the Global South, promote balanced and effective global governance, firmly oppose unilateralism and coercive practices, and jointly support a fairer, multipolar world alongside inclusive, mutually beneficial globalization.
