Chinese President Xi orders swift response to Xizang earthquake prioritizing treatment of the injured.
President Xi Jinping has called for comprehensive rescue efforts to save lives and reduce casualties after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck a county in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region on Tuesday morning, causing significant damage.
In his directive, Xi, who also serves as general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, emphasized the importance of maximizing search and rescue efforts and providing prompt medical treatment to the injured.
He further stressed the need to prevent secondary disasters, ensure proper resettlement of affected residents, and efficiently manage post-disaster recovery efforts.
Xi underscored the importance of enhancing earthquake monitoring and early warning systems, promptly delivering disaster relief supplies, accelerating infrastructure repairs, and addressing residents’ basic needs to guarantee their safety and warmth during the winter.
Premier Li Qiang, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, instructed authorities to assess the disaster situation and casualty figures swiftly, organize robust rescue operations, and minimize loss of life.
Li highlighted the challenges posed by the cold plateau region and urged the deployment of every possible measure to secure the basic welfare of those affected and ensure they remain warm during the winter months.
Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, led a delegation to the earthquake-hit region to oversee and guide the ongoing rescue and relief operations.
