Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in Beijing on Tuesday, where he extended congratulations to Wong on beginning his second term. Xi noted the 35th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Singapore, emphasizing how mutual respect and understanding have consistently underpinned the steady and healthy growth of their bilateral relationship.

Highlighting the strategic alignment of cooperation over the years, Xi praised the tangible achievements such as the Suzhou Industrial Park, which have supported both nations’ modernization journeys and become a model for regional collaboration.

Xi encouraged both countries to draw wisdom from their shared diplomatic history, uphold longstanding traditions, and cultivate the enduring friendship between China and Singapore to ensure it continues to flourish.

He stressed the importance of maintaining a strategic and long-term perspective in advancing bilateral ties, urging both sides to stay committed to the direction of friendship and collaboration.

To strengthen relations, Xi called for reinforcing political trust, supporting each other’s core interests, and solidifying the political foundation of China-Singapore ties.

Xi welcomed Singapore’s deeper participation in China’s development and advocated for expanded Belt and Road cooperation. He proposed joint efforts in cutting-edge areas like the digital economy, green growth, and artificial intelligence, as well as the enhancement of major cooperative projects.

Promoting more people-to-people interaction and cultural exchange was also highlighted by Xi, who emphasized this as key to bolstering public support for the bilateral relationship.

Xi reiterated China’s commitment to peace, development, cooperation, and mutual benefit, warning against the return to hegemonism or power politics. He expressed China’s readiness to work with Singapore to uphold justice and advocate for a multipolar world and inclusive globalization.

Prime Minister Wong, in turn, acknowledged the deep and longstanding friendship between Singapore and China, rooted in mutual trust and respect. He affirmed Singapore’s commitment to the one-China policy and opposition to any form of “Taiwan independence.”

Wong expressed eagerness to capitalize on the opportunities from China’s continued development, expanding cooperation in trade, investment, digital innovation, AI, and new energy, while also enhancing people-to-people ties and elevating bilateral relations.

Amid global uncertainty, Wong stressed Singapore’s willingness to collaborate with China on regional and international platforms to uphold multilateralism and preserve the global order.
