Xi hosts African leaders, lauds model China-Africa ties during the 2024 FOCAC Summit being held in Beijing.
Chinese President Xi Jinping praised China-Africa relations as an exemplary model on Wednesday, as China hosted African leaders and dignitaries at a major summit aimed at strengthening ties. Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, welcomed guests at the Great Hall of the People for the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), China’s largest diplomatic event in recent years, with over 50 African leaders and the UN secretary-general in attendance from Sept. 4 to 6.
In his address, Xi highlighted that he has visited Africa 10 times, and he emphasized that the China-Africa partnership is a shining example of global cooperation. He noted that the bond between China and Africa is deeply rooted in a long-standing friendship that has grown stronger through generations, unaffected by global changes.
Xi mentioned that the partnership has led to the construction of critical infrastructure like roads, railways, schools, hospitals, and industrial zones, which have positively impacted countless lives. He stressed the strength of their cooperation, which has grown over time and made the Global South’s voice more prominent on the world stage.
Confident in the future of China-Africa collaboration, Xi stated that with the unity of 2.8 billion people, the partnership will achieve even greater accomplishments in modernization and contribute to a shared future for all humanity.
Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, co-chair of FOCAC, expressed appreciation for China’s hospitality on behalf of African leaders. He acknowledged that both Africa and China advocate for a fair, inclusive, and mutually beneficial global order. Faye commended China’s development under Xi’s leadership, highlighting its contributions to global peace and prosperity. He reiterated Africa’s commitment to strengthening ties and safeguarding mutual interests.
Additionally, top Chinese leaders, including Li Qiang and Zhao Leji, were present at the event, which concluded with a cultural performance titled “Joining hands for a brighter future.”
