Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasizes collective efforts to build Beautiful China and enhance the country’s greenery through afforestation initiatives.
During a voluntary tree-planting event in Beijing on Thursday, Xi, who also serves as General Secretary of the Communist Party of China and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, highlighted the significance of environmental efforts. He was joined by other top leaders, including Li Qiang, Zhao Leji, Wang Huning, Cai Qi, Ding Xuexiang, Li Xi, and Han Zheng, as they planted trees along a riverbank in Fengtai District alongside local officials and residents.
Upon arriving at the site, Xi greeted the assembled crowd before picking up a shovel to plant various tree saplings. While engaging in the activity, he interacted with children, asking about their studies and daily lives. He emphasized the value of hard work in achieving a good life and encouraged young people to foster a love for nature and contribute to afforestation and public welfare initiatives.
Xi also conversed with local officials and residents, highlighting that China’s forest coverage has now exceeded 25 percent, contributing significantly—about a quarter—to the world’s newly added afforestation areas. He noted the country’s continuous improvements in the ecological environment, which people can directly experience.
However, Xi acknowledged that China still faces challenges in terms of total forest and grassland resources. He called for persistent efforts to address these challenges and ensure continuous progress in forest expansion and ecological conservation.
He stressed the need for effective forest management, enhancement of grassland ecological quality, and development of forestry-related industries. Afforestation efforts, he emphasized, should ultimately bring tangible benefits to the people.
Xi further underscored that voluntary tree planting is a nationwide initiative that should be upheld across generations.
