President Xi calls China-EU partnership one of mutual achievement on occasion of 50th anniversary of China-EU relations.
China and the European Union (EU) share no fundamental conflicts of interest or geopolitical disputes, positioning them as partners capable of contributing to each other’s success, Chinese President Xi Jinping stated on Tuesday.
During a phone call with European Council President Antonio Costa, Xi congratulated Costa on assuming his role and highlighted the 50th anniversary of China-EU diplomatic relations. This milestone marks both a continuation and a new beginning for their partnership.
Xi emphasized that the history of China-EU relations demonstrates that mutual respect, equality, and open dialogue can lead to substantial cooperation and progress. He noted that partnership is defined by like-mindedness and the ability to seek common ground while respecting differences.
The key to the partnership lies in respecting each other’s social systems, development paths, and core interests. Xi reiterated China’s view of Europe as a significant pole in a multipolar world, its support for European integration, and its backing of the EU’s pursuit of strategic autonomy.
Both sides should reflect on their shared history, learn valuable lessons, and jointly uphold the political foundation of their relationship to bring greater benefits to their peoples and contribute to global stability in an increasingly uncertain world, Xi said.
Over the past five decades, China-EU relations have advanced mutual development while fostering global peace and prosperity. Xi stressed that during complex international circumstances, both sides should adhere to the original aspirations of their diplomatic ties.
Xi called for strengthened strategic communication, enhanced mutual trust, and a commitment to partnership, expressing confidence in the EU and hoping the EU will reciprocate as a reliable partner for China.
Highlighting their complementary and mutually beneficial economic and trade relationship, Xi noted both sides’ roles as defenders of the multilateral trading system. He added that China’s commitment to high-quality development and greater openness offers new opportunities for collaboration.
Xi urged both parties to expand openness, strengthen existing cooperation mechanisms, and explore new areas of collaboration. He also encouraged cultural exchanges, people-to-people interactions, mutual visits, and educational cooperation to deepen public goodwill and support the success of events marking the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic ties.
