Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held separate meetings on Tuesday with several African foreign ministers who were visiting China for the Ministerial Meeting of Coordinators on the Implementation of the Follow-up Actions of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. The meeting took place in Changsha, the capital city of central China’s Hunan Province.
The African officials in attendance included Musalia Mudavadi of Kenya, Yassine Fall of Senegal, Mahmoud Thabit Kombo of Tanzania, Selma Ashipala-Musavyi of Namibia, Phenyo Butale of Botswana, and Tete Antonio of Angola.
During his meeting with Mudavadi, Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, reaffirmed China’s readiness to work closely with Kenya in implementing the agreements made by the two heads of state. He emphasized mutual support, deepening political trust, and strengthening the foundation of China-Kenya relations to further advance bilateral cooperation.
Wang highlighted the significance of the ministerial meeting, calling it a platform for strengthening the unity of countries from the Global South.
He further stated that China values Kenya’s regional role and is committed to enhancing strategic coordination with Nairobi in order to jointly defend the rights of developing countries and uphold international norms.
Mudavadi reiterated Kenya’s strong commitment to the one-China principle and affirmed Kenya’s support for China. He expressed interest in further deepening mutually beneficial cooperation between the two nations.
In his meeting with Senegalese Foreign Minister Yassine Fall, Wang stated that China is willing to share the benefits of its development with African nations, including Senegal, and to support their modernization goals.
He also affirmed China’s commitment to multilateralism and to defending the legitimate interests of developing countries, as well as international fairness and justice, alongside Senegal.
Fall assured Wang of Senegal’s unwavering adherence to the one-China policy and praised the strong ties between Senegal and China. She said Senegal is eager to increase high-level exchanges and welcomes further Chinese investment.
While meeting Tanzanian Minister Kombo, Wang noted that Tanzania has effectively implemented the outcomes of the FOCAC Beijing Summit. He appreciated Tanzania’s firm support for China’s stance on matters of core national interest.
Wang said China is ready to work with both Tanzania and Zambia to revitalize the Tanzania-Zambia Railway, making it a flagship example of win-win cooperation between China and Africa.
Kombo expressed gratitude for China’s support in Tanzania’s national development, including zero-tariff measures, and described China as one of Tanzania’s most significant economic and trade partners. He reaffirmed Tanzania’s commitment to the one-China principle and to a strong bilateral friendship.
In talks with Ashipala-Musavyi, Wang said China is eager to strengthen the historic friendship with Namibia based on mutual trust and support, and to inject new vitality into bilateral ties in the current era.
He emphasized aligning development goals and enhancing cooperation to help Namibia accelerate its industrialization and improve the wellbeing of its people.
Ashipala-Musavyi voiced Namibia’s willingness to strengthen coordination with China and expressed confidence in the success of the ministerial meeting.
While speaking with Botswana’s Butale, Wang noted the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Botswana. He reiterated China’s support for Botswana’s pursuit of an independent and self-sustaining development path.
Wang added that China is committed to expanding market access for Botswana and strengthening collaboration across various sectors, including trade, energy, manufacturing, processing, and healthcare.
Butale reaffirmed Botswana’s strong commitment to the one-China principle and expressed a desire to deepen Belt and Road cooperation with China.
During his meeting with Angolan Foreign Minister Antonio, Wang emphasized that China’s policy toward Angola remains consistent and stable, and that its assistance is offered without political conditions.
He reaffirmed China’s support for Angola’s national development and encouraged Chinese companies to invest more in the country. Wang also expressed hope that Angola would safeguard the interests of Chinese enterprises and citizens operating there.
Antonio thanked the many Chinese companies contributing to Angola’s infrastructure and development. He said Angola is ready to further its cooperation with China and will fulfill its responsibilities as the current rotating chair of the African Union.
