Wang Yi, Jake Sullivan hold new round of China-U.S. strategic communication as Sullivan is on an official visit to China.
Wang Yi, director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, initiated a new round of China-U.S. strategic talks with U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan in Beijing on Tuesday.
Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized that the primary goal of this new round of strategic communication is to implement the common understandings reached by the two heads of state during their meeting in San Francisco.
Welcoming Sullivan’s visit, Wang highlighted the significance of China-U.S. relations, not just for the two countries but for the global community as well.
China U.S. Relations
Reflecting on the recent history of China-U.S. relations, Wang noted the challenges and complexities that have characterized the relationship in recent years. He acknowledged that, under the strategic leadership of President Xi Jinping and President Joe Biden, both countries have returned to the agreements made at the Bali summit and are now moving towards the goals set in San Francisco.
Wang stressed the importance of learning from past experiences and anchoring the relationship in mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation.
He emphasized that it is the shared responsibility of China and the United States to implement the common understandings reached by their leaders in San Francisco and expressed his anticipation for in-depth discussions with the U.S. side over the next two days.
Wang expressed hope that this round of communication would be as strategic and substantive as previous ones, and even more constructive, aiming to overcome disruptions and remove obstacles to advancing China-U.S. relations toward the shared vision set in San Francisco. This would help ensure the stable, healthy, and sustainable development of bilateral ties.
Sullivan expressed his pleasure at visiting China for the first time as U.S. National Security Advisor and thanked the Chinese side for their thoughtful arrangements.
He also reaffirmed President Biden’s commitment to responsibly managing the U.S.-China relationship, ensuring that competition does not escalate into conflict, and finding areas of cooperation where mutual interests align.
Furthermore, Sullivan added that he looks forward to engaging in a productive dialogue with the Chinese side on a wide range of issues through this strategic communication, with the goal of implementing the common understandings reached by the two heads of state.
