Wang Yi calls on BRICS members to seek sound strategies for peace during the 14th meeting of BRICS officials in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Wang Yi, director of China’s Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, urged BRICS nations to explore ways for cooperation and develop strategies for peace. He made these comments at the 14th meeting of BRICS officials responsible for security and national security advisors in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Wang, also a member of China’s Communist Party Central Committee, welcomed new BRICS members and noted the world’s shift towards turbulence, with growing security risks, worsening peace deficits, and external interference affecting many developing nations. He emphasized the importance of BRICS countries discussing cooperation in this challenging context.
He highlighted the BRICS mechanism’s adherence to openness, inclusiveness, and mutual benefit over its 18 years, positioning it as a key player in South-South cooperation. Wang underscored the group’s constructive role in promoting global peace, common development, and better governance, with its influence in international affairs becoming more prominent.
Wang noted BRICS’ historic expansion last year as proof of its vitality and called for maximizing the strategic and political impact of the enlarged group. He stressed the need for BRICS to promote peaceful coexistence, multilateralism, political resolutions, and fairness, while defending developing nations’ rights and expanding opportunities for emerging markets. BRICS should assert its voice in global governance.
Wang emphasized the importance of the BRICS political and security cooperation mechanism, calling for its full use to enhance strategic coordination, address core concerns, and guide the international system towards fairness. He reaffirmed China’s support for Russia as BRICS chair and pledged to help ensure success at the Kazan Summit.
Meeting participants praised the BRICS mechanism for its commitment to equality and increasing influence. They stressed the need for continued cooperation with like-minded partners, opposition to unilateralism, and efforts to build a multipolar world that upholds international law and protects equity, justice, and peace.
Wang also participated in a dialogue between BRICS and Global South countries and held bilateral talks with national security representatives from Brazil, Egypt, India, Iran, Serbia, and others. The meeting covered global security threats, counterterrorism, cybersecurity, and global governance, preparing for the upcoming BRICS summit in Kazan.
