China announced that Vietnamese President To Lam will visit for three days, from August 18 to 20, marking his first international trip since assuming his role as Vietnam’s top leader. Foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying confirmed that To Lam’s visit is at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
This visit comes after China and Vietnam agreed to strengthen their bilateral relations during Xi’s visit to Vietnam in December, his first trip there in six years. The visit follows an upgrade in diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the U.S. during President Joe Biden’s visit in September.
Vietnam has traditionally balanced its relations with both China and the U.S. through a “bamboo diplomacy” approach. To Lam’s trip to China will be his inaugural overseas visit as the general secretary of Vietnam’s Communist Party.
