Tesla’s shanghai megafactory begins production in record time marking a key step in its expansion in China.
Tesla, the U.S. car manufacturer, has officially commenced production at its new Megafactory in Shanghai, which specializes in producing Megapack energy-storage batteries. This marks a significant step in Tesla’s expansion within China.
The factory has an initial annual capacity to produce 10,000 Megapacks, equating to roughly 40 gigawatt-hours of energy storage. Tesla aims for a 50% year-on-year increase in energy storage deployments by 2025, reinforcing its global energy ambitions.
Located in the Lin-gang Special Area of the Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone, the facility spans approximately 200,000 square meters and represents a total investment of 1.45 billion yuan (about 202 million U.S. dollars), as per local authorities.
Remarkably, large-scale production at the factory began just eight months after construction started, showcasing Tesla’s rapid execution. This efficiency mirrors the company’s Shanghai Gigafactory, which was built and operational within a year in 2019.
During the launch ceremony, Tesla Vice President Mike Snyder praised Shanghai’s remarkable efficiency, stating that the factory’s swift completion marks the beginning of an exciting year for Tesla. He emphasized its pivotal role in Tesla’s global production network.
