Sihanoukville SEZ drives economic growth under BRI representing a strong partnership between China and Cambodia.
The Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone (SSEZ) has played a crucial role in enhancing local living standards, creating over 32,000 jobs, and becoming a key driver of economic growth in Preah Sihanouk province.
Spanning 11.13 square kilometers, the SSEZ is a major project within China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), representing a partnership between Cambodian and Chinese businesses.
In a joint interview with People’s Daily and Cambodian journalists on Friday, Liu Lianchi, Deputy Managing Director of the SSEZ, highlighted the zone’s significant contributions to local employment and development, stating that the creation of over 32,000 jobs has greatly improved workers’ income and living conditions.
The SSEZ serves as an international investment hub, strategically located 17 km from Sihanoukville, 12 km from the Autonomous Port, 3 km from the international airport, and 4 km from the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway.
According to Liu, the SSEZ exemplifies the strong bond between Cambodia and China, contributing to local workforce development through its ties with the Sihanoukville Institute of Business and Technology (SIBT). Currently, 202 companies from China, Europe, the United States, ASEAN, and other regions operate within the zone, representing around 70% of all factories in the province and highlighting its central role in regional industrialization.
Since its establishment in 2008, the SSEZ has been called the “engine of local economic development” and a “golden plate” for the people, Liu concluded.
