Remains of 43 Chinese martyrs in Korean War returned to homeland from ROK.
On Thursday, the remains of 43 Chinese People’s Volunteers (CPV) soldiers, who died in the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea (1950-1953), were repatriated from the Republic of Korea (ROK) to China.
A Y-20 transport plane of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force, carrying the remains of the soldiers and 495 personal items, touched down in Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning Province in northeast China, around noon.The soldiers’ remains will be interred at a martyrs’ cemetery in Shenyang.
On Thursday morning, after the Republic of Korea handed over the remains and belongings to China in Incheon, a memorial service was held at Incheon International Airport. The Chinese national anthem was played, and each casket was covered with the national flag. Attendees paid respects by bowing three times before the remains were loaded onto the plane.
Between 2014 and 2023, China and the Republic of Korea successfully conducted 10 consecutive handovers of CPV soldiers’ remains, totaling 938 martyrs, along with their belongings, following international laws and humanitarian guidelines.
The Korean War began in June 1950, shortly after the People’s Republic of China was established. At the request of North Korea, Chinese CPV ground forces entered the Korean Peninsula on October 19, 1950. Over 2.9 million CPV soldiers participated in the war, which lasted nearly three years, resulting in over 360,000 casualties.
