China’s highways are expected to witness record-high electric vehicle (EV) charging volumes during the upcoming Spring Festival holiday, as per data from the State Grid Corporation of China.
Daily charging on highways is predicted to exceed 7.5 million kilowatt-hours during the eight-day holiday starting January 28, reflecting a 52% increase compared to the same period last year.
The peak single-day charging volume is anticipated to surpass 9 million kilowatt-hours during the holiday, representing a 34% year-on-year growth.
The data also indicated that charging demand will surge between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on January 26 and 27, the peak travel days before the holiday, as millions of travelers take to the roads.
To address the growing demand, China has significantly expanded its charging infrastructure. By the end of 2024, 98% of highway service areas were equipped with charging facilities, amounting to 35,000 charging poles nationwide.
Additionally, the number of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in use in China reached 31.4 million by the end of 2024, a staggering 260-fold increase over the past decade. This growth is attributed to advancements in NEV technology, expanded charging networks, and heightened eco-awareness among Chinese citizens.
