Pakistan’s high capacity freight wagons to boost rail transport that are co-built by Pakistan Railways and a Chinese company.
In a bustling factory in Lahore, Pakistan, workers are busy assembling 115 flat wagons, part of a larger project to enhance local railway freight transportation. These wagons, set to be ready by April, are part of an order of 620 freight wagons being built collaboratively by Pakistan Railways and the Chinese company Baotou Beifang Chuangye Co., Ltd.
Philippe Mi, the Chinese project director for the 820 High-Capacity Wagon (HCW) project, shared that when all 620 freight wagons are operational, they will double Pakistan’s current railway transportation capacity.
In 2021, Beifang Chuangye secured a contract to supply 820 high-capacity freight wagons to Pakistan Railways. These include four types of wagons: open-top, flat, covered, and cabooses. By 2022, 200 wagons had already been delivered and put into service.
In 2024, 115 high-capacity open-top wagons, assembled in semi-knocked-down (SKD) form at the Risalpur factory, were deployed on key freight routes between Karachi Port and inland locations. This deployment helped increase transport capacity and relieved the pressure on Karachi Port’s storage facilities.
Aamir Baloch, CEO of Pakistan Railways, emphasized the economic benefits of locally produced railway wagons, noting that this move would reduce Pakistan’s reliance on imports and support local industries, marking a significant step toward economic self-sufficiency.
The standardized design of the wagons ensures operational consistency and compatibility, helping to lower the costs of maintenance and operations for Pakistan Railways. Ishaq Butt, the Pakistani Project Director for the 820HCW project, highlighted the importance of this efficiency, especially as infrastructure development is a national priority.
The production of these wagons has generated around 450 direct jobs. Ishaq Butt also noted that this project has trained many young technicians, boosting Pakistan’s manufacturing capabilities for the future.
Beifang Chuangye has supported the project with both theoretical training and hands-on guidance, ensuring the effective setup of wagon assembly lines in Lahore and Risalpur. Their assistance has encompassed personnel training, equipment upgrades, and quality control, contributing to the overall improvement of factory operations.
