Pakistan’s envoy to the United Nations stated on Friday that the country does not intend to escalate tensions. He emphasized that this position has been clearly conveyed by the nation’s leadership at every level.
At a press conference held at the UN headquarters in New York, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said that Pakistan has informed the UN Secretary-General, the President of the General Assembly, and the Security Council about the recent developments and shared its stance and concerns with other global partners.
While reiterating Pakistan’s desire to avoid conflict, Ambassador Ahmad affirmed that the country is fully prepared to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial boundaries if required.
He also condemned terrorism in all its forms, stating that there can be no justification for attacks on innocent civilians.
The ambassador stressed Pakistan’s aspiration to maintain peaceful, cooperative, and neighborly ties with all countries in the region, including India, based on mutual respect, sovereign equality, and the peaceful resolution of disputes.
He warned that the current situation in the region could seriously endanger global peace and security and urged immediate steps to de-escalate. He cautioned against provocative rhetoric and unilateral measures.
Ambassador Ahmad appreciated the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and others advocating for dialogue and de-escalation. He encouraged continued and intensified diplomatic engagement to avoid conflict.
The remarks come amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan after a deadly attack targeting tourists in Pahalgam, located in Indian-administered Kashmir, on April 22.
