Pakistan seeks enhanced energy cooperation with China, Iran at the Third Belt & Road Ministerial Conference held in Qingdao, China.
Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari is working to enhance energy partnerships with prominent Chinese firms and Iran at the Third Belt & Road Ministerial Conference in Qingdao, China.
In separate discussions with Yao Huan, Vice-President of Power China, and Ni Zhen, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and General Manager of Energy China, Leghari focused on modernizing Pakistan’s power dispatch and transmission systems to reduce energy distribution losses. Referring to Premier Li Qiang’s recent visit to Pakistan, Leghari emphasized Pakistan’s goal to revamp its power infrastructure. In the meeting with Vice President Yao of Power China, they discussed establishing an advanced research and development center in Pakistan to integrate cutting-edge technologies and best practices, which would improve operational efficiency and support sustainable energy initiatives. During talks with President Ni of Energy China, Leghari explored future energy cooperation under CPEC’s second phase, aimed at diversifying Pakistan’s energy sources and adopting new technologies. He invited both leaders to Pakistan for further dialogue on these initiatives.
Separately, Leghari met with Iranian Energy Minister Abbas Ali Abadi on the sidelines of the event, highlighting the importance of cross-border energy projects to boost regional connectivity and trade. Consequently, the discussions focused on electricity initiatives in Gwadar, Balochistan, and the need for regular coordination in plant operations to maintain steady energy output. Both ministers acknowledged the rising regional energy demands and stressed the importance of effective plant management and ongoing communication to strengthen energy collaboration.
