Pakistan, China to develop high tech aquaculture industry in Gwadar as COPHC presented a detailed plan.
China’s Overseas Ports Holding Company (COPHC) has unveiled an ambitious plan to establish a high-tech aquaculture industry in Gwadar, a coastal city in Pakistan. The Ministry of Maritime Affairs termed the initiative a “transformational opportunity” that could significantly enhance coastal development in the country.
Situated in the underdeveloped Balochistan province, Gwadar is a strategic location where China is building a deep-sea port under the $60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The region is largely arid and mountainous, making development projects especially critical for its economic upliftment.
Aquaculture involves cultivating aquatic life such as fish, shrimp, crabs, seaweed, and other marine or freshwater species. During a meeting with Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, COPHC Chairman Yu Bo presented a vision for creating a sustainable, high-tech aquaculture industry in Gwadar. The minister stated that the project could leverage local marine resources to transform the city into a major center for seafood production, processing, and international trade. It also promises to boost employment, attract investment, and contribute to local economic growth.
Minister Chaudhry affirmed the government’s commitment to supporting investors and enterprises seeking to develop in the country, particularly in initiatives that enhance the blue economy. He emphasized that the government welcomes projects that introduce capital, innovation, and job creation along the coastal belt.
Highlighting Gwadar’s advantageous sea conditions and geographic location near global markets, the minister pointed out the area’s strong potential for aquaculture. He underscored the need to develop hatcheries, processing plants, and eco-friendly aquaculture farms that align with international standards. Chaudhry concluded that a thriving aquaculture sector could help increase exports and improve food security in Pakistan.
