Pakistan-China talks focus on security and partnership as a high ranking delegation of China is on a visit to Pakistan.
Counter-terrorism and regional security were the central focus of Pakistan-China military talks held on Wednesday.
General Zhang Youxia, Vice Chairman of China’s Central Military Commission (CMC) and one of its top military leaders, is visiting Pakistan with a high-ranking delegation.
General Zhang met with Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir, for a one-on-one discussion, followed by delegation-level meetings.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the discussions revolved around “matters of mutual interest, regional security dynamics, measures for regional stability, and enhancing bilateral defence cooperation.”
General Zhang acknowledged Pakistan’s counter-terrorism efforts, which remain a significant topic due to the increasing attacks targeting Chinese nationals working in Pakistan.
While media reports suggest China seeks a more active role in protecting its citizens in Pakistan, the Foreign Office emphasized that counter-terrorism collaboration between the two nations is founded on mutual respect for sovereignty.
Under the topic of regional stability, the two sides discussed India’s regional role and developments in Afghanistan, particularly concerning the presence of terrorist groups.
General Zhang’s visit follows an August trip by General Li Qiaoming, commander of China’s People’s Liberation Army Ground Forces, to Pakistan.
Chinese troops are also participating in Warrior-VIII, a joint military exercise hosted by Pakistan that runs until mid-December, aimed at enhancing counter-terrorism operational coordination.
General Munir highlighted the resilience of Pakistan-China relations, emphasizing their ability to withstand global and regional shifts. He expressed gratitude for China’s consistent support.
General Zhang commended Pakistan’s dedication to the strategic partnership and reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.
The two generals last met in Beijing in April 2023, where General Zhang pledged to deepen practical cooperation, enhance military ties, and jointly promote regional peace and stability.
