Pakistan has formally joined China’s Global Development Initiative (GDI) to enhance its efforts in meeting the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Given its close ties with China and ongoing collaboration through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), Pakistan is well-positioned to incorporate GDI into its national development plans.
The GDI, proposed by China, emphasizes eight priority areas including poverty alleviation, climate adaptation, green development, and digital transformation. Pakistan intends to use a collaborative approach involving government officials, youth, and academia to turn GDI into a practical and results-oriented framework for growth.
As an initial step, the Pakistani government will engage parliamentarians and political stakeholders in consultations to embed GDI into national policies. Officials believe that political consensus is key to integrating GDI with existing plans like Vision 2025 and the country’s SDG strategy.
Creating public awareness is also central to the plan. Awareness campaigns will be launched to educate citizens about GDI and highlight its potential to drive innovation, inclusivity, and sustainable economic development.
Youth participation and academic involvement are expected to play a pivotal role. The strategy includes setting up GDI-focused research centers at universities, involving students in development initiatives, and updating academic programs to reflect GDI priorities.
Additionally, the initiative aims to link development efforts with broader human security issues. By addressing challenges like poverty, climate risks, and digital threats, Pakistan hopes to strengthen internal stability and promote regional peace and global cooperation for lasting development.
