Pakistan agreed to host 15 freed Palestinian prisoners according to a Hamas spokesperson.
Pakistan has agreed to host 15 Palestinian prisoners released under a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, according to a Hamas spokesperson. The announcement, made on Monday, recognized Pakistan as a supportive ally of the Palestinian cause.
The ceasefire, which took effect on January 15 after 15 months of conflict, includes the phased withdrawal of Israeli troops from central Gaza and the return of displaced Palestinians to the northern region.
As part of the agreement, Hamas agreed to release 33 Israeli hostages, including women, children, and men over 50, while Israel committed to freeing 30 Palestinian detainees for each civilian hostage and 50 for each Israeli female soldier released.
Hamas spokesperson Dr. Khaled Qaddoumi confirmed that Israel has so far freed nearly 180 Palestinian detainees, some of whom have relocated to Egypt. Several Muslim nations, including Pakistan, have expressed their willingness to host these prisoners, as reported by Arab News.
“We have received official confirmation that Pakistan will accept 15 released prisoners. We are immensely grateful to the Pakistani government, its people, and leadership for this support,” said Dr. Qaddoumi.
Pakistan’s government has not yet made an official statement on hosting the prisoners, though the move aligns with its historical support for Palestine.
Reports from Quds Press indicate that 99 Palestinian detainees have already been transferred to Egypt, with another 263 expected to be released in the first phase of the deal.
The agreement’s second phase will focus on releasing the remaining Israeli hostages and ensuring the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
Since Israel’s military offensive on Gaza began in October 2023, Pakistan has provided humanitarian assistance and launched a public donation campaign to aid the affected Palestinian population.
“Our commitment to Palestine remains strong, and we appreciate the continued support from the Pakistani people and leadership,” Dr. Qaddoumi added.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in immense casualties, with over 47,000 Palestinians reported killed and extensive destruction in Gaza, which has been under Israeli occupation since 1967.
