Pakistan has begun the local production of high-speed passenger coaches and freight wagons with assistance from China.
This milestone stems from a successful technology transfer agreement between Pakistan and China, as confirmed by Pakistan Railways (PR).
The advanced manufacturing processes are being carried out at Pakistan Railways’ facilities in Islamabad and Lahore, where Chinese experts have been instrumental in enhancing the technical capabilities of Pakistani engineers and technicians. This knowledge transfer has enabled Pakistan to produce modern rail components independently.
The Pakistan Railways Carriage Factory in Islamabad has been assigned to assemble 184 cutting-edge passenger coaches over the next three years, a move expected to significantly enhance the capacity and quality of the country’s railway system.
This initiative is part of broader infrastructure modernization efforts under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The progress of various rail, road, and economic zone projects was recently discussed in a meeting between Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong and Pakistan’s Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal.
Additionally, China is actively contributing to the upgrade and dualization of Pakistan’s Main Line-1 (ML-1) railway track. This 1,872-kilometer route, connecting Karachi and Peshawar, was originally built in the late 19th century. The $6.8 billion modernization project aims to transform it into a dual-track, high-speed railway system.
