The 27-kilometer subway line with 26 stations was built through the collaboration of China Railway Group Corporation and China North Industries Corporation under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework and began operations on October 25, 2020.
A ceremony to mark the milestone of carrying 200 million passengers was held at Anarkali Station. Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan, Jiang Zaidong, remarked on the significance of the Orange Line, calling it both a major landmark and a vital livelihood project. He highlighted the creation of over 2,000 local jobs through collaboration between Chinese and Pakistani teams.
Aurangzeb Khan, a UET student, shared that the Orange Line has become his daily commute, offering a comfortable, safe, and punctual alternative to the costly private car he previously used.
Safdar Husain, a frequent metro commuter and advocate at Lahore High Court, noted the economic boost along the metro line, as vendors are eager to set up businesses near the subway. He hopes for continued collaboration between China and Pakistan on similar projects to further enhance Pakistan’s economic development.
Adnan, an office worker, praised the subway for changing travel methods for people from all walks of life, particularly benefiting those with disabilities and the elderly.
College student Mariam expressed her appreciation for the security and convenience the Orange Line provides, especially as it connects both ends of Lahore efficiently, reducing the need for personal vehicles and lowering pollution.
Since its launch, the Orange Line has operated safely for 47 months, with leading industry standards in punctuality and performance. It surpassed 10 million passengers in March 2021 and 200 million in September 2024.
