The Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) Ministerial Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH), in partnership with Hunan University of Chinese Medicine (HUCM), China, has announced the launch of the second edition of their Joint Technicians Training Program. The initiative is scheduled from June 8 to 17 in Changsha, China and aims to build on the strong foundation laid by its successful inaugural session.
This year’s program will once again bring together technicians and technologists from OIC member nations and beyond. Participants from various Science, Technology, Engineering, and Medicine (STEM) fields will engage in immersive, hands-on training with advanced laboratory equipment and techniques, taking full advantage of HUCM’s state-of-the-art research infrastructure.
The initiative addresses the urgent need for greater technical capacity across the OIC region, where widespread issues like poverty, healthcare challenges, food shortages, and environmental degradation continue to impede sustainable growth. Despite the vast potential within the OIC’s 57 member states, the lack of skilled technical professionals remains a significant barrier to scientific and technological advancement.
In response, COMSTECH and HUCM have designed a specialized training program focused on building practical laboratory skills crucial for innovation and research. Nineteen participants will be trained in sophisticated analytical and diagnostic techniques such as LCMS, GCMS, FTIR, MS, and NMR.
The program is specifically intended for lab technologists, technicians, and early-career researchers working in universities, hospitals, or research institutions. Applicants with educational qualifications in laboratory sciences, engineering technology, or postgraduate STEM studies are encouraged to apply, with a priority given to women and candidates from Least Developed Countries (LDCs) within the OIC.
This collaboration highlights the importance of international academic partnerships in strengthening technical capabilities and promoting resilience in science and technology sectors, particularly within the Global South.
The COMSTECH–HUCM Joint Technicians Training Program represents a forward-thinking approach to collaboration—one that empowers individuals, drives scientific innovation, and supports inclusive development across the OIC and beyond.
