German retail giant Metro AG plans to launch a new store in Haikou, the capital of Hainan Province in southern China, during the latter half of this year.
Spanning 12,000 square meters, the store will be located in Haikou MOVA, a vibrant cultural and tourism complex in the city’s central business district. The complex combines duty-free shopping with high-end retail stores, fast-fashion outlets, sportswear brands, and gourmet dining options.
Metro AG first entered the Chinese market in 1996, opening its inaugural store in Shanghai. Today, the company operates 98 stores across the country.
The upcoming membership store will provide exclusive discounts and personalized shopping recommendations. To better meet local demand, Metro AG will focus on offering products and services aligned with local tastes, with a particular focus on vacation and leisure-related items.
In June 2020, China unveiled a master plan to transform Hainan into a world-class free trade port by mid-century. The initiative aims to establish Hainan as an international hub for tourism and consumption by 2025 and elevate it to a globally recognized destination by 2035.
