Media delegation praises Karot Hydropower Project as a landmark green energy project under CPEC.
A delegation of media representatives and parliamentarians visited the Karot Hydropower Project on Monday, a key venture under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). During their visit, they were briefed on the project’s capacity to generate 720 MW of clean energy annually, contributing 3,206 GWh to Pakistan’s national grid. The project plays a significant role in combating climate change by reducing approximately 3.5 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
The Senior Advisor at China Three Gorges South Asia Investment Ltd (CSAIL) explained that the reliable and affordable energy produced by the project would enhance industrial efficiency and support critical sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, and services, which rely on consistent electricity supply. The advisor also highlighted the project’s long-term impact on reducing Pakistan’s reliance on imported energy, improving energy security, and fostering economic stability.
The Karot Hydropower Project, a single power-generation complex, includes a rock fill dam, spillway, powerhouse, and several tunnels for water flow and energy production. Developed under the Power Policy 2002 on a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) model, the project has a 30-year concession period. It is a priority initiative under CPEC, with a total investment of USD 1.74 billion and an installed capacity of 720 MW, delivering an average annual output of 3,206 GWh.
The project has also created substantial employment opportunities, generating approximately 5,000 jobs during construction and employing 200 local workers alongside 25 Chinese nationals in its operational phase. Additionally, it has undertaken numerous Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, such as building schools, healthcare centers, vocational training programs, and essential infrastructure like roads and water systems.
The delegation praised the project for addressing Pakistan’s energy needs while fostering socio-economic progress. The visit underscored the success of Pakistan-China collaboration, demonstrating how mutual efforts and innovation can drive sustainable development.
A spokesperson for the Karot Hydropower Project emphasized that the initiative represents a broader commitment to empowering communities, supporting a transition to green energy, tackling energy shortages, and enhancing the quality of life for local residents.
