Iranian FM Abbas Araghchi arrives in Islamabad to discuss ongoing regional political scenario.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi arrived in Pakistan on Monday, according to the Pakistani Foreign Office, with the primary aim of enhancing bilateral relations and addressing regional developments, particularly in light of growing tensions between Islamabad and New Delhi.
Pakistan and Iran maintain strong diplomatic and economic relations, having signed various agreements in areas such as trade, energy, and security. Although occasional disputes have arisen over border security, both nations have consistently worked to resolve differences swiftly.
Araghchi’s visit comes amid escalating hostilities between India and Pakistan following the April 22 attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that claimed the lives of 26 tourists. India has accused Pakistan of being behind the attack; a claim Islamabad firmly denies. The two nuclear-armed nations have since exchanged retaliatory measures, including cross-border shelling that has persisted for ten consecutive days.
The Foreign Office confirmed Araghchi’s arrival in Islamabad, noting that he was welcomed by Additional Secretary for West Asia Syed Asad Gillani, Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan, and other senior officials.
During his stay, Araghchi is scheduled to meet with key Pakistani leaders, including the President, Prime Minister, and Deputy Prime Minister, to discuss matters of mutual concern.
A statement issued by the Foreign Office on Sunday highlighted that the visit underscores the shared commitment of both nations to deepen bilateral cooperation and engage in dialogue on regional and global affairs.
Iran has expressed willingness to mediate between Pakistan and India, with Araghchi stating that Tehran is prepared to offer its “good offices” to help resolve the standoff. This offer comes amid rising fears that India may initiate limited military actions along the border with Pakistan. A Pakistani official recently claimed Islamabad possesses credible intelligence suggesting India may launch an attack within days.
With diplomatic outreach already underway in response to India’s aggressive stance, Pakistani leaders are expected to brief Araghchi on the current crisis and seek Iran’s support in de-escalating tensions.
