Hainan’s Visa-Free tourism surges in 2024 as reported by the local authorities on Friday.
In 2024, the number of foreign tourists entering Hainan, an island province in southern China, under the visa-free policy increased by 283 percent compared to the previous year, local authorities reported on Friday.
A total of 2.14 million inbound and outbound trips were recorded in Hainan in 2024, with foreign visitors making up 47.5 percent of these journeys, according to data from the Haikou General Station of Immigration Inspection.
Hainan has consistently benefited from favorable visa-free entry policies, which have been the primary way foreign travelers gain access to the province.
Over recent years, China has implemented various measures to simplify travel for international visitors. Late last year, the country significantly eased its visa-free transit policy, extending the allowed stay for eligible travelers from 72 and 144 hours to 240 hours, or 10 days.
Rao Jun, an official at the inspection station, highlighted that the number of border inspection channels in Hainan has increased from 39 to 98, enabling quicker and more efficient customs clearance.
Hainan’s three main airports—Haikou Meilan International Airport, Sanya Phoenix International Airport, and Qionghai Boao International Airport—currently operate 70 international routes, linking the province to nearly 40 cities worldwide.
