The Gwadar Port Authority (GPA) is gearing up to begin containerized shipments of Australian fertilizer to Afghanistan via the Eastbay Expressway, following new customs procedures.
On September 20, around 24,000 metric tons of DAP fertilizer from an Australian ship were processed and unloaded at Gwadar Port. The entire shipment has been stored in a warehouse located in the Gwadar Free Zone North.
A Gwadar Port Authority official informed that the warehouse is co-owned by two Pakistani companies, KB Fertilizers and Agven Limited. The fertilizer will be packaged and shipped to Afghanistan in containers. Besides importing DAP, Agven also produces Muriate of Potash (MOP), which it exports to the Pakistani market and Afghanistan.
In response to a query, the official mentioned that over the past eight years, more than 230 ships carrying roughly 1.5 million metric tons of cargo have docked at Gwadar Port. The first shipment of trade cargo left the port on November 13, 2016. Furthermore, with the proper operational systems in place, as outlined in the Gwadar Master Plan, the port could handle 400-500 million tons of cargo annually. For comparison, Karachi and Port Qasim currently manage 120 million tons annually.
