Gwadar Airport to unlock opportunities for Pakistan: PM Shehbaz Sharif stated while chairing a cabinet meeting.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated on Wednesday that the New Gwadar International Airport in Balochistan province will create significant economic opportunities for Pakistan, according to an official statement.
Chairing a federal cabinet meeting, Sharif highlighted the potential of the China-aided, world-class airport to transform Pakistan into a commercial hub by boosting trade and investment.
The airport, a state-of-the-art 4F-grade facility, can accommodate the largest civil aircraft. It features a 3,658-meter-long and 75-meter-wide runway with advanced foundation treatment, setting new engineering standards.
Construction of the airport began in 2019 and was completed in 2024, after which it was officially handed over to Pakistan.
Addressing previous connectivity issues, the airport will enable modern airlines to operate in Gwadar, fostering regional economic development and establishing Gwadar as a transshipment hub integral to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Sharif emphasized the importance of export-led growth for economic progress and expressed satisfaction with the government’s efforts to stabilize and further boost the economy.
He noted that remittances reached $15 billion in the first five months of the current fiscal year, with projections of hitting a record $35 billion by July if the trend continues.
CPEC, launched in 2013 as a flagship project of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, connects Gwadar Port to Kashgar in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
