LONDON: In a groundbreaking milestone, Israr Kakar, a student from Balochistan, has been elected as the president of the Oxford Union. This marks a historic first, as Kakar becomes the third Pakistani and the very first individual from Balochistan to hold this prestigious position.
Founded in 1823, the Oxford Union is one of the oldest and most esteemed debating societies in the world, renowned for its legacy of fostering debate and intellectual exchange among students.
Mr. Kakar hails from a small village in the Qila Abdullah district of Balochistan. His journey to this remarkable achievement is nothing short of inspirational. Notably, his elder brother was also a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, making Israr the second in his family to attend this illustrious institution.
Upon his election on Saturday, Mr. Kakar expressed his gratitude and hopes for the future in an interview with Geo News. “I am incredibly grateful to the members of the Oxford Union for placing their trust in me. This achievement will inspire the next generation of aspiring young people from humble backgrounds,” he said.
